In the aftermath of the 2007-2008 market collapse, we had wide-ranging discussions about how to best capitalize on the dislocation. After much due diligence, we agreed to invest in a start-up real estate finance company that aimed to rebuild a significant CMBS platform. To date this company has directly originated over $15 billion of commercial real estate loans. While not an investment directly into “bricks and mortar”, it has proved to be a very rewarding real estate investment, made possible by our relationships with a range of industry professionals and our ability to act on opportunities that our analysis points to as timely.
